The world is scrambling to find ways to put out the fires that continue to ravage parts of the Brazilian Amazon. But travellers can help to be part of the solution in ways that most don't realise. Of the 6.5 million visitors to Brazil each year, only about two per cent make it into the Amazon. Once there, their reals get pumped into micro economies, supporting artisans and chefs on the ground. But, crucially, if they choose to go with the right tour operator a portion of their total spending will be funneled right back into conservation groups such as the Protected Forest Association (PFA), which manages sections of the rainforest and has lobbying clout against Brazilian politicians.
Abercrombie & Kent's new Brazil office recently launched tours into the area occupied by the indigenous Kayapo tribe. On its Meet the Kayapo Tribe trip, which can be booked now for next summer, travellers will visit local communities and explore this largely undeveloped part of the country, taking jungle hikes and going fly fishing. Not only is a lump sum from each trip sold donated directly to the PFA, Abercrombie & Kent has announced it will match all dollars donated, via its philanthropic arm.
Alternatively, Brazil-based Matueté offers low-impact boat tours along Amazon tributaries the Tapajós and Negro rivers, where travellers can visit bird sanctuaries and spend time observing the fishing traditions of the Ana community. These trips remind us that tourism can often be a smart way to help preservation's cause.
